Contact Dermatitis- How To Go About It?





Contact Dermatitis has varying names but it is simply defined as an inflammation on the surface or beneath the skin after having contact with either an irritant or an allergen. Persons having a history of some allergic diseases increase the risk of contact dermatitis.

It has several classifications with distinct features, causes and risks. Some of the most common types of contact dermatitis are the following:

• Irritant Dermatitis- This is the most common type of contact dermatitis. The swelling is usually due to contact with acids and alkaline substances especially those that come from detergents.

• Allergic Dermatitis- This is due to the exposure of an individual to substances that he or she is hypersensitive or allergic to. Allergic dermatitis ranges from mild to reddish sores on the affected area of the skin.

• Over treatment Dermatitis- This is a lesser category of contact dermatitis that resulted from a treatment of another type of skin disorder.

Symptoms of contact dermatitis are itching, skin redness, tenderness of the skin, skin lesions and rashes, the skin also become rough and scaly, the affected area becomes warm. If you experience the said signs it is better if you consult a dermatologist immediately.

For the initial treatment, you should have regular washing of water in order to remove the irritant that inflicts the surface of the skin. Topical steroid is also an advisable treatment prescribed by the doctors. To prevent contact dermatitis always practice proper hygiene and constant washing of your hands.
